Mandela National Stadium, popularly known as Namboole Stadium, is Uganda’s premier national sports facility and the country’s most iconic venue for international football, athletics, and large-scale national events. Located in Namboole, Kampala, the stadium serves as the official home ground of the Uganda national football team (The Uganda Cranes) and stands as a symbol of national pride and sporting excellence.

Originally opened in 1997 and named in honor of Nelson Mandela, the stadium was developed to provide Uganda with a modern, international-standard sports arena capable of hosting continental and global competitions. Over the years, it has hosted AFCON qualifiers, World Cup qualifiers, CECAFA tournaments, national athletics championships, state functions, concerts, and major public celebrations.

The stadium has a seating capacity of approximately 45,000 spectators and features a FIFA-compliant football pitch, an IAAF-standard athletics track, VIP lounges, media facilities, dressing rooms, and auxiliary training areas. Following an extensive rehabilitation and modernization program (completed in 2024), Mandela National Stadium was upgraded to meet contemporary international safety, structural, and competition standards, restoring its status as a CAF- and FIFA-approved venue.

Beyond sports, Mandela National Stadium plays a critical national role as a multi-purpose events venue, supporting youth development, national unity, entertainment, and Uganda’s growing sports economy. It remains the heartbeat of Ugandan football and a landmark of the country’s sporting heritage.
